Beet It Sport March 2019 Ambassador Amanda Foland

Jana Richtrova: US Beet It Sport Ambassador – April 2019Would you describe yourself as an athlete?

I have always been an athlete. I grew up playing basketball, and that’s actually how I came to the United States when I was 18 years old. I played division 1 basketball, and thought I was going to play basketball forever, which didn’t quite materialized, but I did find a new sport, lifestyle, and career.

Have you always been a triathlete?

No, I grew up as a basketball player. I never swam, I owned a mountain bike which was my mode of transportation to and from bball practice, and I only ran to chase the orange ball. I actually hated running because it was always something we had to do as punishment for things gone wrong on the basketball court.   After college, when I entered the corporate world, I would stay in shape by going to the gym, or to spin classes, and eventually did my first sprint triathlon in the summer of 2009. That re-kindled my competitive spirit, and the rest is history.

Do you participate in many races?

I focus on long distance triathlons and mostly the ironman distance (2.4 mile swim/112 mile bike/26.2 mile run), so I don’t race too often as it takes quite some time to get ready and also to properly recover, but in the last 2 years, I have done 3x Ironman races in 12 months, plus 70.3s and other running races as well. The ironman distance is my favorite as it challenges you physically but also mentally, and I LOVE the challenge.

What motivates you to train and compete harder?

I just love the challenge. The challenge of putting together that perfect race. The perfectly executed swim/bike/run and nutrition, because in a 10 hour day, the proper fueling & hydration along with proper swim/bike/run execution determines how the day goes. I am also super competitive, and have a goal of winning the amateur title at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. I have come close, but close isn’t enough, and that also drives me every day.

Any tips on nutrition that you try and follow?

Nutrition plays a key role in my training and race prep, but I don’t believe in dieting and follow the “everything in moderation” approach. With that said, I try to eat healthy, and fuel my body well before and after every training session. I am a bit more careful in the days leading up to races, and I stick with the saying “nothing new on race day”! Beet It Sport shots are also part of my routine before any super intense or long training sessions and definitely before races!

How did you hear about Beet It Sport?

My coach actually introduced me to “Beet It Sport” few years ago, and I was quite happy with the taste. I used to juice beets at home, but really just didn’t enjoy the taste at all so when I came across Beet It Sport shots, I was ecstatic! Ecstatic with the taste and the fact, I no longer had to hold my nose, shut my eyes and drink at least 12 oz of beet juice!

Did you notice a benefit to using Beet It Sport?

Yes!  I use Beet It Sport shots before intense sessions, and feel like I can really get just that little extra out of myself. I also use it before all my races, and I do believe that it gives me that little extra competitive advantage you need to reach the top.
